From Then Until Now

The Echoes’ adventures ended in 1123, after more than a year of battling supernatural foes. The Empire they returned to, however, was filled with strife and hatred.

Canon History

1122-1128: The Lion-Crane War
The Lion Clan invades Crane territories with the secret aid of the Scorpion and Crab Clans. They sack several major cities and pillage the countryside, allowing a Shadowlands Army to sack Kyuden Doji in 1127.

The Echo Effect

1122-1128: The Lion-Crane War
The Lion’s first advance into Crane lands was stymied by a single, one-armed duelist who challenged their generals, one after another. The deaths of the Lion generals held off the invasion long enough for the Crane to maneuver into position, cutting down on losses for both sides.

Canon History

1123: The Death of the Hare Clan
The Kolat manipulate the Scorpion Clan into invading and destroying the Hare Minor Clan.

The Echo Effect

1123: The Death of the Hare Clan
The Kolat, still reeling from the loss of Master Coin and his heirs, were too busy embroiled in their own power plays to meddle in Scorpion affairs. The few who tried quickly found the Scorpion Clan prepared for them, and armed against their manipulations.

Canon History

1123: The Scorpion Coup
The Scorpion Clan Champion Bayushi Shoju assassinates the Emperor, occupying the Imperial Capital with his troops. Hida Kisada brings Crab troops from the Wall and (after denying Shoju’s request for aid) joins with the other Clans in all but exterminating the Scorpion. The remnants of the Scorpion Clan are banished to the Burning Sands, and the Akodo Family of the Lion Clan are disbanded for their inability to protect the Emperor.

The Echo Effect

1123: The Scorpion Coup
Despite the protests of at least one of his Daimyos, Bayushi Shoju continued his plan to assassinate the Emperor.

Canon History

1125: The Absorption of the Falcon Clan
The release of the Shuten Doji results in the Falcon Clan’s near-destruction, and the remaining family members are absorbed into the Crab Clan as the Toritaka family.

The Echo Effect

1125: The Absorption of the Falcon Clan
Toritaka Benkei, upon gaining temporary leave from Sanjuro Hinata, challenged Kisada to a duel over the fate of the Falcon Clan. Despite the Falcon eventually losing, The Great Bear was impressed enough to restore the Falcon Clan with some of his own samurai.

Canon History

1126: The Clan War Begins
The Crab once more march North under Hida Kisada, the Great Bear, this time to besiege the Imperial Capital with their allies from the Shadowlands. The Badger Clan is wiped out by an Oni Lord. The Lion-Crane War reaches its height, involving the Phoenix, and every Major Clan begins acting against the others. The ronin Toturi, formerly head of the Akodo Family, leads troops into Crane lands to fight the Shadowlands army.

1127: The Clan War Continues
The Elemental Nemuranai are forged in an attempt to restore the Balance. The Mantis Minor Clan unites with most of the other Minor Clans in Yoritomo’s Alliance. The Unicorn, Dragon, Ronin, and Naga armies under Toturi drive the Crab back. The Phoenix help push the Shadowlands armies and Crab raiders out of Crane lands. Hida Kisada’s third son is nailed to the Terrible Standard of Fu Leng, and his firstborn’s name is stolen by the youngest Oni Lord. The Unicorn Clan betray Toturi, but his army escapes total defeat.

1128: Fu Leng’s Return
The Dark Kami Fu Leng possesses Hantei XXXIX: Kisada fights him using the Crab’s strongest artifacts, but is soundly defeated and mortally wounded, though he refuses to die for another two years. The Mantis are made a Great Clan, and the Second Day of Thunder begins: Fu Leng is killed, and the Shadowlands armies are utterly routed.

1129: A New Emperor
Toturi I, formerly Akodo Toturi and Toturi the Ronin, is proclaimed Emperor of Rokugan.

The Echo Effect

1126-1129: The Clan Wars
When an army of bandits and ronin threatened Mongoose lands, Sanjuro Sakura put them to rout with fire and sword. Armies approaching Kitsune Mori mysteriously go missing with disturbing regularity. Rumors continue that a ghostly giant of a man resembling the deceased Hida Takeshi fought the possessed Emperor, giving Hida Kisada’s retainers time to get their wounded lord out of the Imperial City.

1129: Thunders and Souls
The surviving Souls (Honor, Sincerity, and Compassion) met with the surviving Thunders (Protection, Destruction, Knowledge, Mercy, and Purity) on the edge of Kitsune Mori after Fu Leng was slain. No one knows what they spoke of, but Emperor Toturi I immediately declared the Fox and Mongoose Clans Sacrosanct. For one year and a day after that meeting, the Emperor was watched over by an obscured figure in green robes, wielding a crystal katana.

Canon History

1130: Kisada’s Death
Hida Kisada, The Great Bear, at last succumbs to the wound dealt him by Fu Leng. On his death he is declared to be the Fortune of Persistence by the Emperor: it is not the last Rokugan will see of The Great Bear. Shortly afterward, The Emperor is kidnapped and the recently-reinstated Scorpion Clan is blamed.

1131: The Shadow Undiminished
The Shadowlands continue to slowly grind away the remaining Crab Clan armies, while the Lying Darkness plants seeds of doubt and war elsewhere.

1132: The Emperor’s Return
Toturi I returns from being tormented by the Lying Darkness, and issues the Three Edicts. He attempts to purge the Kolat from the Imperial City, and has the entire Imperial Court executed. Ultimately he marries Isawa Kaede and, freed from his madness, commits seppuku.

1133: The Darkness Unveiled
The Empress reveals the existence of Lying Darkness to the Imperial Court. Battles with the Shadowlands ramp up as the Lying Darkness continues devouring the Ancestors, culminating in the pitched Battle of Oblivion’s Gate between the armies of the Empire and the combined forces of the Lying Darkness and the Shadowlands. The Lying Darkness is named, and all but destroyed: The Dragon of Air takes on the last scrap of Nothing, becoming the Shadow Dragon. Thousands of human spirits from the other Realms pass through The Oblivion Gate and into Ningen-do. Lord Moon and Lady Sun are replaced by mortals.

1134-1137: Rebuilding
Toturi I reclaims the Throne, and Rokugan begins rebuilding.

1138-Present: Trouble Already
Hantei XVI, a returned spirit, demands the Jade Throne. When Toturi refuses, The War of the Spirits begins, and continues for more than ten years until the present…

The Echo Effect

1133: Reunited Once More
During the Battle of Oblivion’s Gate, Sanjuro and Keitaro returned from Yomi to battle the forces of Shadow once again. The Kitsune Yamako released Hida Takeshi’s purified spirit from the Egg of Purgatory, and the Souls held the line, united once more, while the armies of Rokugan arrived and maneuvered into position.

1138-Present: Split-Decision
The Souls continue to protect their chosen peoples, Paragons of their Paths within Bushido. With both Emperors regrettably lacking in concern for the people of Rokugan, and the fact that six of the seven Souls were now Spirits (whom the Emperor Toturi had decreed should commit seppuku rather than be a burden on Rokugan), the band is uncertain of how to proceed in these trying times.
